The Future Workplace: From Designing Things to Designing Relationships

“In a world of ‘work-life blending’, it is important for us as designers to look at the office as a space of possibility and to design these exciting interfaces — the in-between. After all, it is these open spaces that can release incredible energy and it’s the spaces in between that have the most potential to create something new — because innovation always takes place at the boundaries.”

Our perception of work is changing rapidly: How will we work in the future? In his presentation, Peter Ippolito emphasized the need to question conventional concepts of architecture and interior design. While the world of work has so far focused on forms and products, the real challenge lies in the relationships and opportunities created by spaces. Peter Ippolito used the offices of companies such as Hassia, Beiersdorf, Continental and Ritter Sport to show what this could look like in practice. Rather than creating seemingly perfectly designed office spaces, the aim in all the projects shown was to design spaces in which health, encounters and lifelong learning are possible. At the same time, architecture and furnishings need to be more open to change than ever before. The message was that spaces are never finished and offices are not temples but tools.

The short interview was recorded after the lecture. A more detailed summary of the lecture will be available shortly in the IBA Forum Newsroom
