The world of scientific research is undergoing profound changes, driven by technological advances and changing working models. Against this backdrop, the Leibniz Association is exploring the idea of sharing infrastructure. Axinia Braunisch and Dr Robert Polgar presented initial approaches to more efficient use of resources in non-university research organizations.
One of the reasons for the Leibniz Association’s project was the planned occupation of two buildings by the Leibniz Information Centre for Economics in Hamburg. Given the rapid changes in the world of work, it was foreseeable that more space would be needed for communication and networking. Independently of this, the organizations that make up the renowned non-university research organization also face the challenge of creating an attractive working environment for their employees. The result was WorkNew@leibniz project, where interested members of the Leibniz Association could exchange experiences and take part in safaris to other companies. The aim was to share knowledge and provide building blocks for a new way of working. One publicly visible result of this project is the internet platform WORKNEW@leibniz.
The next step is to share resources as well as knowledge. As a first step, an app-based booking system is planned that will allow scientists to reserve workplaces at other participating Leibniz organizations. Other considerations include laboratory equipment, meeting rooms and training opportunities. The structure of the Leibniz Association poses a particular challenge for this model project because it is a network of legally and economically independent organizations.
