The Immobile Society: How Metamobility Will Change Our Working Environments

The term “metamobility” refers to a transformation that defines the virtual and the physical worlds as a new intersection and represents them as a game of possibilities in the truest sense of the word. When shopping, work or the next conference are just a click away, our behaviour and attitudes towards (public) space change.

In his introductory lecture, Stefan Carsten stressed the importance of creating a counter-model to the digital world. Cities such as Singapore, Paris and, most recently, Heidelberg show how urban space once reserved for cars can be used to create a higher quality of stay. What has already proved successful in larger cities — with local retailers benefiting as well as employers, who find it easier to get their staff to the office in such an environment — is still a challenge in rural areas. Carsten points to the opportunities offered by services based on autonomous driving and mobility clusters that combine different modes of transport. In the ensuing discussion, New Work specialist Michael Trautmann and mobility expert Stefan Carsten explored these ideas in more detail and drew a parallel with offices. Their advice to companies is to always invest in communication, not just in furniture.
