Where Architecture Meets Furniture: A Journey Through Japan's Modern Design Heritage

In recent years, Japanese furniture has gained increasing international recognition. However, furniture did not become a common part of everyday life in Japan until after World War II. In this lecture, Naoki Terada traces the evolution of Japanese furniture, showing how Japan rapidly embraced aspects of the European lifestyle after the war while developing a unique design culture of its own.

The history of furniture is inseparable from the history of the living environment. Using the danchi—the large-scale postwar housing developments that transformed the lifestyles of millions of Japanese—as a case study, Naoki Terada explores the close relationship between architecture, furniture, and everyday life.
