Social Thinking About Space: From Office to Connection

Offices are built – workplaces emerge. Despite modern architecture, new workplace concepts, and flexible office layouts, many offices still fall short of their potential. Why? Because workplaces are more than design and square footage. They only gain meaning through people: through encounters, routines, collaboration, and leadership.

In the context of hybrid work, the dynamics between employees and leaders are fundamentally changing. Different expectations around presence, collaboration, and belonging meet new challenges within the social fabric of the office. How can leaders shape workplaces in ways that make employees want to come to the office – without relying on return-to-office mandates?

Amelie Marie Fischer and Dr Ann-Sophie Lauterbach explore in their keynote how space is socially constructed, which tensions shape hybrid work environments, and which concrete leadership levers can foster belonging, collaboration, and employee satisfaction in the office.
