Flexible working models that offer employees plenty of freedom to choose their working hours and workplace do not always lead to positive results in terms of employee satisfaction. In her presentation, Dr Katharina Radermacher examined the complex effects of different working models on employee satisfaction. She looked at flexible (free choice of time and place), inflexible (prescribed working hours and presence in the office) and hybrid working models.
Based on a recent study, Dr Katharina Radermacher explained the role of HR practices as a crucial resource to compensate for the disadvantages of these working models. The focus was on communication, career development, pay and benefits, and the working environment. It was shown that good communication can significantly increase the success of flexible working models, while salary and benefits can increase satisfaction with inflexible working models. The strongest effects were found for technical and physical working conditions, i.e. workplace design. This has a significant impact on how employees evaluate hybrid and inflexible working models.
